| Dr._Ellwood | I guess we can get rolling now guys, first just a little reminder of how we will proceed to keep this interview moving along with as much efficiency as possible. When you check into the chat, make one post saying “ I have a question for Glen” …I will log your name and make a list based on the order in which you logged in with your “ I have a question for Tom” post. If after your question is answered, you have another question or follow up on your original question I will log that and come back to you. Please remember Glen will be doing allot of typing and trying to go quickly, give him time to respond and this will go very well. |

| Geetarpicker | I'll let the Dr. call the shots |
| Dr._Ellwood | Craig and Doc, I think we are going to try the new format today with Glen: and start out with questions for Glen from the group instead of from Mods.. |
| mdrs | O.K. |
| Dr._Ellwood | I will call in order by check in : |
| Dr._Ellwood | Bytored your first question for Glen: |
| bytored | Hi Glen... What pickups are You using in your Les paul? |
| Geetarpicker | They are original double white PAFs, not original to the guitar. I paid $500 for the pair in '85, and they are about 8.2k each. |
| Geetarpicker | Those were the days... |
| mdrs | I have a question |
| Geetarpicker | y |
| Dr._Ellwood | one follow up each..bytored another ?? |
| bytored | I just l;ove the tone form you paul... but it may b the Trainwreck also... Great tone either way.. |
| Rampdog | question |
| Geetarpicker | Thank you |
| Dr._Ellwood | Ramp your question: |
| Rampdog | On your inro to the vid for Trainwreck the three chords you use F, C, G the slide up is what? |
| Dr._Ellwood | guys use your type ahead buffer and when you come up just post it: |
| Rampdog | I tried |
| Geetarpicker | Hmmm...as I grab guitar... |
| Dr._Ellwood | take your time Glen... we have lots of time here! |
| Geetarpicker | I'd have to hear it to remember |
| Rampdog | You do a nice chordal trem with it |
| Rampdog | I can't figure out or see what you are doing |
| Geetarpicker | are we talking the video called "can you hear it ring?" that doesn't have backing tracks? |
| Geetarpicker | hold & I'll pull up youtube |
| Rampdog | no... the vid you do for the amp |
| Dr._Ellwood | remember we will have a follow up thread created for Glen: |
| Rampdog | you talk a bit about your 59 LP |
| Geetarpicker | give me 10 seconds |
| Dr._Ellwood | no problem Glen |
| Dr._Ellwood | MDRS you are next: |
| mdrs | OK |
| Rampdog | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2_12Ler9B8 |
| Rampdog | sorry... I know this is not the kind of question we were hoping for |
| Geetarpicker | It looks like I do a small double stop on the D and B string |
| Dr._Ellwood | not a problem at all Ramp: |
| Geetarpicker | no prob but a little tricky to answer quickly as it was improvised.. |
| Rampdog | and the bass e? Is rooted on G? |
| Geetarpicker | I use my thumb alot for bass notes. |
| Zephyr | i have a question |
| mdrs | looks like a G chord with top two fingers doing a C chord |
| Geetarpicker | 1st fret F etc... |
| Dr._Ellwood | Got u logged ZEP |
| Geetarpicker | I got that stuff from acoustic playing. |
| Rampdog | good enough... |
| ChatBot | /login fenderplayer53 |
| Rampdog | love that LP |
| Rampdog | smooch |
| Rampdog | smooch |
| Dr._Ellwood | 53 you are logged |
| Geetarpicker | Had that guitar since '78 |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK MDRS: your question for GLEN |
| mdrs | So Glen, you swapped out the original PAF's from your '59 Burst? If so, why? And, do you have the originals? Is the '59 otherwise all original? Does it have a baseball bat neck? Can you tell us how you came about buying it? |
| mdrs | run on question!!! |
| fenderplayer53 | hi uncle glen it's michael |
| Geetarpicker | It had one changed pickup in it when I got it, as the prior owner snagged a coil taking a cover off. Also they were starting to be too microphonic so I took up an offer on another set that were untouched. |
| Geetarpicker | The neck on my '59 is smaller in the shoulders than most R9 reissues. I can't figure out why the new ones are so big. |
| Dr._Ellwood | follow up MDRS: |
| fenderplayer53 | what model fulltone do u reccomend i get? |
| mdrs | How did you come about buying it? |
| Dr._Ellwood | fender player I will call you for questions by check in: thanks |
| Geetarpicker | I met a guy during an amp deal when I was 16 that had the burst, then a couple years later I inherited some cash and offered the guy. |
| Geetarpicker | Dear Fenderplayer, I sent you a couple emails on that subject! |
| mdrs | So, you knew it was a great axe, or you realized that they were collectable? Or both?? |
| Geetarpicker | Guitar Player magazine had an article in '75 about vintage guitars, and I already had a '65 SG standard and a '59 Jr. so a burst was the obvious next step up. The new Les Pauls then were really no so good. |
| mdrs | Do you love it?? :P |
| Dr._Ellwood | Guitarzan you are next: |
| Geetarpicker | I knew Keith and Page and Kossoff played burst so that was the tone I wanted. |
| ChatBot | /login trucks |
| Rampdog | question |
| Dr._Ellwood | you are logged Trucks: |
| Geetarpicker | Yep, love the guitar it's also light at 8.5lbs |
| Geetarpicker | Has a stinger on the back which is quite rare. |
| Dr._Ellwood | ZAN your question for Glen please: |
| mdrs | stinger? |
| Geetarpicker | black on back of headstock like a Byrdland or something... |
| mdrs | gotcha |
| Dr._Ellwood | ZAN: |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok we will come back to ZAN...... ZEPHYR your question: |
| Zephyr | I'm going to stray a bit and ask about your songwriting: When you're writing for the guitar, what do you do differently to stand out from everyone else? |
| Dr._Ellwood | great question Zep!!! |
| mdrs | question |
| Dr._Ellwood | logged MDRS: |
| Geetarpicker | Well, when we wrote for the CD we basically wrote for ourselves. We initially had no intention of commercial release and were hoping maybe for soundtrack use. Only later did we decide to put it out on CD. |
| Geetarpicker | So, maybe when you don't have a set market or intention that helps?... |
| Dr._Ellwood | FENDERPLAYER YOU ARE NEXT: |
| Dr._Ellwood | FOLLOW UP ZEP |
| Zephyr | well, I was wondering more along the lines of playing style or technique? |
| Zephyr | something that isn't straight pentatonic ;) |
| Geetarpicker | I like to use my fingers with the pick alot, I got that from Danny Gatton mostly. |
| Geetarpicker | I like to play melodic enough so that you can hear the chord changes even if it's only lead and bass. I guess that comes from playing in 3 piece bands alot. |
| Geetarpicker | I use modes alot on occasion. |
| Dr._Ellwood | fenderplayer your question for Glen: |
| Dr._Ellwood | FENDERPLAYER53 |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK... WE will come back to fenderplayer |
| Geetarpicker | He's probably still digging for info about an overdrive for Christmas he wants! |
| Dr._Ellwood | TRUCKS your questions |
| Geetarpicker | My nephew.. |
| trucks | ? |
| Dr._Ellwood | OH LOL!!ok |
| mdrs | LOL..good for him! |
| Geetarpicker | Fulldrive 2 seems like a good start |
| Dr._Ellwood | did you have a question Trucks? |
| trucks | no, think Ramp did |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok |
| Geetarpicker | I have a funny story about my 1st experience with a Trainwreck amp. |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok Glen GO!!! |
| Geetarpicker | ok, typing |
| Dr._Ellwood | no problem |
| Geetarpicker | In '89 I walk into Anglea Instruments Vintage shop in Maryland and see and odd amp that is all cut up on top. It seems they used it to cut sandwiches on as it looked like a cutting board. Steve let me borrow that amp (an original Express) for a week (!) and I had to have one and later got on the "list" for one. |
| Dr._Ellwood | Doc please do me a fav. and post some of Glens links here |
| mdrs | OK |

| mdrs | I have a trainwreck related question |
| Geetarpicker | ok |
| Dr._Ellwood | I have a question for GLEN |
| Dr._Ellwood | go doc |
| mdrs | I'd love to hear the story of how you had Ken Fischer build you a Trainwreck and a Liverpool. How'd you get hooked in with Ken? Tell us about the Trainwreck amp? What's it's name? Is there anything out there that you've played that comes close? Have you compared Andy Fuchs "Trainwreck" copies to yours? |
| Geetarpicker | I'll cover as much as I can. |
| mdrs | And, what was Ken like??? |
| mdrs | thanks!! |
| Dr._Ellwood | dont worry about being super fast Glen... we want a good transcription of this!! |
| mdrs | www.myspace.com/glenkuykendall |
| Zephyr | i have a question |
| Dr._Ellwood | LOgged ZEP: |
| Geetarpicker | Ken was very helpful always. Like I said I borrowed the first TW amp I had seen then got on the list. They were about $1200 with no money up front. After a couple months I hear of a TW amp that Ken built that had some issues, and would be sold as a 2nd for $850. I got that amp. It had some issues that turned out to be a defective batch of power transformers, and later I got another transformer from Ken that totally corrected the problem. Basically there was sometimes background noises. But it's all good now. |
| Geetarpicker | Since Ken had resoldered some things looking for the problem he decided to sell the amp as a "2nd". |
| Dr._Ellwood | tell me when you are done Glen ok |
| mdrs | Anything out there now that compares? How about Andy Fuchs "trainwreck copies"? |
| Geetarpicker | On my 1993 videos that's a different amp a Liverpool that I don't have anymore. |
| Geetarpicker | I haven't played the Fuchs ones. |
| Dr._Ellwood | would you like too!! |
| Geetarpicker | I think the guys at the Amp garage probably build the best ones today. I personally built two clones for my own use of my orignal and they are very close in tone to my original. I don't build for others though. |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK stand by ZEP!!! |
| mdrs | Did you meet Ken in person? |
| Geetarpicker | Met Ken twice in NJ, and played other amps there including the Rocket. |
| ChatBot | /whereis Dr._Ellwood Public |
| mdrs | Impressions? |
| Geetarpicker | My friend went up to Ken's and video taped him. Some of the footage is on my Youtube channel. |
| Dr._Ellwood | Done Doc?? |
| Geetarpicker | Ken was always the greatest help to me. Even with speaker choices, cords, pickups. However sometimes I'd call him and just talk about motorcyles or something. "Trainwreck" was his riding name before he built amps... |
| Geetarpicker | Interesting character for sure, very funny too! |
| ChatBot | /logout trucks |
| Dr._Ellwood | ZEP your question please: |
| Zephyr | I'm going to touch on songwriting a little again: I feel that guitar solos when used loosely can harm a song, but when used cleverly can enhance it. When you decide to put a guitar solo in, what's your mental approach for creating one, and do you try and create one on the spot or do you build it methodically as you would write a song? |
| mdrs | Links to Glen's vid of Ken Fischer; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLfK8buTreM&feature=related |
| Geetarpicker | Some of my CD (solo wise) was improvised for the 1st take, then I'd go back and perfect the execution. Some where just improvised totally, maybe doing several takes to get a good one. Also I did alot of controlled feedback stuff that takes some trial and error. I'm not a fast highly technical player, so I try to play a solo that has feel and tone to it and luckily maybe it will be interesting. |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK now I have a question Glen: |
| Geetarpicker | I do think chord progressions when I solo, and follow visual chord shapes for ideas. Not exactly arpeggio based but the same concepts. |
| Geetarpicker | cool |
| Dr._Ellwood | Glen you are in Nashville ..do you consider yourself a rocker ..or a country guy |
| Dr._Ellwood | who do you associate with there .. rock or mostly country players or both |
| mdrs | question |
| Dr._Ellwood | Logged Doc: |
| Geetarpicker | I've only been in Nashville for 10 years, and I play enough country to fit in. However I'm more of a rocker at heart for sure. Heck I've played my burst on the Grand Ole Opry, though usually I play a strat but very little with the tele. |
| Dr._Ellwood | oh we need to talk aout the Grand Old Opry too!!! |
| Rampdog | 17:17:51) Rampdog: question (ahmem) |
| Dr._Ellwood | is it AMAZING back stage!!!! |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok gotcha Ramp sorry man' |
| Geetarpicker | That said, to keep gigging in Nashville you have to wear many hats. I've played in everything from bass in a Bluegrass band to Malcolm Young in an ACDC tribute. Everything from a Fender Deluxe to a full Marshall stack dimed... |
| Dr._Ellwood | Ramp... then Doc, sorry guys i got distracted by the OPRY!!! :P |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK NOW RAMP!!!! |
| Rampdog | I'm not a collector...no money for that but your opinion on 2000 and up LP's? |
| Geetarpicker | Yep the Opry is a cool experience, you only get 90 seconds or so to throw down a pedal board and plug into the house amps and go. |
| Geetarpicker | I recently got an '03 historic stinger series blacktop R7. Nice guitar. Sounds different than my original but still excellent, just different. |
| Geetarpicker | ?s |
| Rampdog | Do you really notice a BIG difference in them? |
| Dr._Ellwood | SIDE NOTE: Glen you NEED to get with MDRS on his collection!! you will love it!!! |
| Geetarpicker | Big difference in historic vs original burst? |
| Rampdog | pretty much |
| Rampdog | Standard or custom |
| mdrs | I do like old guitars.........:P |
| Dr._Ellwood | O:-D |
| Geetarpicker | The original is both smoother and more balanced than the reissue, but the reissue does sound very fat. The original just a bit more mids that really fill in the leads. The necks are still too big IMHO compared to the originals. Electically I swap out the pots for original old pots, and I potted the pickups. |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK... Doc did you have another question? |
| mdrs | Two parter |
| Geetarpicker | Also "50s wiring" really helps the reissues, not sure why they don't come that way. |
| Geetarpicker | ok |
| Zephyr | I got one last question |
| mdrs | tell us about the effect of using old post on the new "re-issues" |
| Dr._Ellwood | oh ok sorry ?Zep |
| mdrs | then....We have lots of guys here doing, or learning to do home recording. I understand that you are a home recording guy. What equipment do you use? What software? |
| Zephyr | no, mdrs can go |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK go doc |
| mdrs | I did |
| mdrs | :) |
| Dr._Ellwood | K |
| Geetarpicker | mdrs: I haven't tried swapping posts. |
| mdrs | sorry, old pots |
| mdrs | typo |
| Geetarpicker | I use Sonar recording software, an RME interface and API mic pres. My CD however was recorded a few years back on a Tascam analog 1" 16 track. |
| Rampdog | sorry... so you mic your amps... no modeling? |
| Rampdog | oops sorry |
| Geetarpicker | As far as the pots in newer gibsons... They come on way too fast to use with a Trainwreck amp. You need a pot that comes on slowly to find a good range for the clean tones. With a stock reissue "clean" would be maybe 1 to 2 on the knobs and hard to get too quickly. On the old pots they come on more slowly and maybe 2-5 would be still clean and easier to turn to quickly on the fly. |
| Geetarpicker | No modeling, though I've done session work at other studios with a Pod. |
| mdrs | good to know! |
| ChatBot | /login Millo |
| Dr._Ellwood | are we clear on all questions so far? |
| Geetarpicker | In new pots the Dr. V ones are the best ones and better than stock for sure, and I think RS makes some that are comprable. Still, old Centralabs are nice if you can find them. |
| Dr._Ellwood | got ya MILLO: |
| Dr._Ellwood | you are logged |
| Rampdog | I'm good |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK... new check in.. MILLO do you have a question for GLEN |
| Millo | Sorry for the late arrival! Yup, short one |
| Zephyr | can I squeeze one quick one in after Millo? |
| Dr._Ellwood | yes you can Zep |
| Millo | Hey Glen: you play w/ lots of dynamics. Do you think that Trainwreck amp allowed for refinement and/or changed the way you played electric guitar? |
| bytored | Question |
| ChatBot | /login Caevan_O'Shite |
| ChatBot | /logout Guitarzan Timeout |
| Dr._Ellwood | got you Bytored: |
| Millo | Sorry that was probably asked before, sorry for arriving late |
| Dr._Ellwood | its ok Millo.. Glen will answwer |
| Geetarpicker | Not really. My prior amps before the Wreck were 4 input Marshalls. Mainly a '70 Marshall 50 and '68 Marshall 100. Both these amps worked well for my style. However the Trainwreck does have more range from "clean to scream" as folks like to call it. However luckily I've always been used to single channel amps that responded well to dynamics both in playing and knob control. |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok any follow up MILLO |
| Geetarpicker | Lately I've started to build a recreation of my old '70 Marshall 50 that are in my videos from 1981. |
| Millo | Nope, I'm somewhat busy, multi-tasking |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK BYTORED: |
| bytored | Who was/is your biggest influence and what MADE you want to play way back in they day? |
| Caevan_O'Shite | (Hi-yah... ) |
| Geetarpicker | I had a high school friend guitar player friend named Mike Freelander. I haven't been in touch with him in over 25 years. He played a '65 SG and had a cool old 40s PA head called an Operadio. He was the first player I ever saw up close that got killer tone and didn't even use any pedals. I ended up buying his SG. Even though I was really into Page, Richard, Hendrix, Kossof, and others my friend Mike had a big influence when I was first learning. |
| Dr._Ellwood | more BYTORED? |
| Geetarpicker | Still, probably Jimmy Page might be my biggest influence. |
| bytored | Nope that ist... thanks |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok great..CAEV any questions for GLEN |
| Geetarpicker | ok |
| Caevan_O'Shite | Any thoughts on pickups, and even pots and caps, contributing to that dynamic response for "playing the amp"?(Hope this wasn't asked here already) |
| Rampdog | question |
| Geetarpicker | Yep, I touched on the pots earlier. But with the Wreck I do prefer PAFs for humbuckers and Lindy Fralins for strat pickups. |
| Dr._Ellwood | logged RAMP: |
| Dr._Ellwood | more CAEV? |
| Dr._Ellwood | RAMP: go... |
| Rampdog | Do you use drum programs when recording at home? If so which ones? |
| Caevan_O'Shite | Cool, thanks, I'll read the transcript later; what about playing technique? |
| Geetarpicker | In my historic I run stock pickups, but the pots are from '61 the only parts on it I've changed. |
| Caevan_O'Shite | (Oops, sorry) |
| Geetarpicker | I just have a Roland Dr770 but usually only use it for click tracks. |
| Dr._Ellwood | its ok Carv I know ur on dialup.. |
| Geetarpicker | Erin Conley is the drummer on most of my stuff. |
| Rampdog | That was my follow up... thanks |
| Dr._Ellwood | ok |
| Dr._Ellwood | Glen do you know David Grissom |
| Geetarpicker | I know who he is and would like to meet him. |
| Dr._Ellwood | yes we interviewd him here a nice guy and fine player |
| Geetarpicker | I read most of it... |
| Dr._Ellwood | OK... are there any more questions from anyone |
| Zephyr | ... |
| Caevan_O'Shite | ('Nother question?) |
| Dr._Ellwood | GO CAEV |
| bytored | Question |
| Dr._Ellwood | Logged Bytored: |
| Caevan_O'Shite | If you don't mind, would you expound on playing technique concerning dynamic, color-shading playing , "playing the amp", both technique and control-settings and such? |
| Geetarpicker | Well, with the Trainwreck amp I usually set the amp with all knobs on 1/2. At that point then it's very gainy and you have to back the guitar down for clean. When getting a clean tone you also have to feel the amp's breakup point and hold back just enough dynamically for it to not clip. Then for leads I can just turn the guitar up. For a similar (almost) amount of gain on a vintage Marshall I'd probably set the volume on 10, and the other knobs to taste. |
| Caevan_O'Shite | Yeah, I tell people to "set the amp louder than you really intend to play, roll-back the guitar's volume-knob, and go from there"! |
| Geetarpicker | One trick I use with the Trainwreck amp to mellow out the highs (which they are known to have ample amounts) is I almost run two long chords in series. |
| Dr._Ellwood | SEE!! that's why I run my amps OPEN!!! |
| Dr._Ellwood | sorry LOL!!! |
| Geetarpicker | Folks that don't work their guitar knobs usually don't "get" the Trainwreck amp when they play it. |
| Caevan_O'Shite | Cool- I have a Fuchs Lucky 7 tyhat;s VERY bright and really needs more lows, for me; what about speakers and cabs? |
| Geetarpicker | I do however have a pedal board setup for other amps, it's the Nashville way sometimes to get total volume control. |
| Caevan_O'Shite | (Cool, don't be sorry, Lee!):D |
| Dr._Ellwood | Ok guys.... I think we better wrap up the formal interview now: |
| Geetarpicker | I use either old Celestion 25s or Scumback 25 repros, they call them M75s. |
| Caevan_O'Shite | "it's the Nashville way"! LOL!~ |
| Dr._Ellwood | Glen I would like to thank you for your time and patience with this format and you did a great job this evening! There will be a transcript available on the forum soon. Please stick around for a open session here if you can. We will post a follow up thread for you to answer questions after your interview that you can answer at your leisure: |
