mdrs O.K., you guys all know how this works, right?
Rampdog Si
splitting_hare Yep.
mdrs I'll start off..........David, how are things??
Greg_B. Greg
mdrs :P
dgrissom No complaints......doing some sessions both here and in Nashville and playing some gigs as well
mdrs speaking of gigs, I know tons of guys who are dying to see you live. When will we all get the chance?
dgrissom Oh, and I finally got the cherry sunburst DGT I ordered about a year ago
mdrs THIS IS GOOD!!
ChatBot /login Rhino_Madness
mdrs How do you like it??
dgrissom Probably at the experience...it is so expensive to take a band on the road....I love the DGT
Dr._Ellwood I have a question for David...
mdrs So do I!!
Greg_B. I have a question
mdrs go greg
mdrs OK, Greg you are on
dgrissom But I love all the DGTs.........I have to acknowledge that I can only play 1 at a time
mdrs LOL...........
Greg_B. A couple of things...first, I've got both of your CDs and really like them alot.
dgrissom thank you
Greg_B. Second, I've seen you with Marshalls and Bad Cats, what is your current amp setup.
dgrissom well............I have been playing a PRS Dallas the last few months. The CD is a whole list of amps and I did not have the PRS amps then.
dgrissom I am working with Doug Sewell designing an amp from the ground up
mdrs tell us of your impressions of the Dallas
Greg_B. I can
Rampdog http://www.ask.com/bar?q=DGT+guitars&page=1&qsrc=2417&ab=0&u=http%3A%2F%2Fnamm.harmony-central.com%2FSNAMM07%2Farticle%2FPaul%2BReed%2BSmith%2FPRS-Guitars-DGT.html
Rampdog sorry... thats your link to your sig model
Greg_B. I can't wait to hear a PRS amp.
mdrs David, I recently saw that Derek Trucks has gone PRS.......how do you like your Dallas/PRS amp?
dgrissom The Dallass is somewhere between tweed and black face....more blackface.....takes pedals well and will do a warm clean thing really well too
mdrs are you playing it live?
mdrs ie for shows?
Greg_B. Sorry, one more thing...I promised my 8 year old son that I would tell you that he LOVES "Loud Music"..the whole CD. He sings along to all of the songs....Sake & Venom is his favorite!!! What can I say, he gets his good taste in music from his Dad!!!!:P:D
dgrissom Yes, I played it Friday night and it ruled.....I have to confess that I changed a few tubes
dgrissom Your son rules
mdrs :P
Greg_B. :DThanks, he's gonna have a fit when I tell him that!!!!!
mdrs O.K., Lee, you are on
Dr._Ellwood Hi David, Lister Coleman in Los Angeles. Very nice guitar playing, we are all pretty much in awe of what you do, here at the String Network. David my question is about money as a sideman. This is not to try figure out your personal wages ...more from a point of view of someone who is a good player but is just breaking in.Is there a general standard amount that is considered basic pay scale for a sideman, say with a touring band with a well established artist. I know rates must vary but is there sort of a "going rate" and is there such a thing as retainer where one is paid while the artist is not on tour? Also what is basic Scale for union work as a sideman studio musician?I am curious what kind of wages a starting out guitar player could possibly make a year if they worked hard and got on a tour or two.Thank you.
mdrs while David is typing, here's a link so you can buy his CD's; Here is a link to David’s web site, and you’ll note that you can hit links to CD Baby in order to order David’s CD’s;

http://www.davidgrissom.com/
dgrissom Hmmmm............wages are all over the map. In this economy what used to be a $3500/week gig may now be a $1500/week gig....retainer is becoming rarer. There are a few gigs that still pay upwards of $5k. Most lower stature country bands pay under $1000/week.Studio..........for major label projects single scale is $375 per 3 hour session
Dr._Ellwood Ok great David... ok Doc next
dgrissom when I started I just took every gig and didn't worry about the money as much.....you can't buy the experience gigs give you
mdrs David, I want to know why it took a year for you to get your Cherry Burst David Grissom Trem?? LOL
dgrissom Also, Now there are so many low budget recording projects,,,
mdrs and then, on a more serious note.......You spent a lot of time and effort developing the DGT’s pickups, from what I’ve read. What were you after?
dgrissom They expect to use your studio for free and then pay you like $100/song................
dgrissom I was after the best PAF tone I knew of which was my 59 335.
dgrissom PAFs vary wildly by the way
mdrs I hear a bit of an edge, almost a Tele edge, to the DGT pu's.........does your 335 have that??
Greg_B. I've got another question
mdrs and, do you use that '59 335 in the studio these days?
dgrissom It has a lot of top end but it is warm and open not shrill at all./ It also has a pretty robust midrange so when you add the top, there is some balance underb
dgrissom underneath
ChatBot /login Geoff
mdrs well, I have one big problem with my DGT
mdrs and
Greg_B. hey Geoff, glad you could make it!!
Geoff Yo!!
mdrs it's that I CAN'T GET IT BACK FROM MY SON
Greg_B. :D
dgrissom No, I don't use the 335 at all.....honestly, I play the DGT for everything except baritone.....it plays and tunes up better
mdrs O.K., Greg back to you
dgrissom with the coil taps and trem.............it does everything I need 95% of the time
dgrissom the 335 smells better though
Greg_B. How are things going with Storyville? Any chance on catching them live anywhere?
ChatBot /logout mdrs Timeout
dgrissom also, I hate having to play through that first month of the nitro curing but it is worth it
ChatBot /login mdrs
Greg_B. Old guitars do have a nice aroma to them, don't they? :D
dgrissom Storyville is officially retired.....for now at least
dgrissom :P
mdrs You guys sounded so well together, the Storyville guys.....
Greg_B. I could listen to Malford sing all day long!!!
dgrissom Thanks....it is hard to explain but things change
mdrs Greg did you have another question?
Dr._Ellwood I have a slide question
dgrissom derek trucks
Greg_B. No
mdrs derek trucks???
Greg_B. I meant, no, no other questions
Dr._Ellwood David, what are your fav slides? how do you set up for slide, do you use open tuning or standard or both
mdrs gotcha Greg
dgrissom I use a heavy glass slide.........standard and open tunings and use my fingers instead of a pick. I'm not very good at slide......that's why I said Derek Trucks......he kills me
Dr._Ellwood well he kills us too!! thanks David... done Doc...
mdrs follow up, Lee?
Dr._Ellwood nope done for awhile
mdrs David, have you played with Derek?
dgrissom I played with the Allman Brothers for 3 weeks in '93 and Derek came out and sat in....The SG was bigger than him then........he was incredible then
mdrs LOL
dgrissom I play with Pat Buchasnan a lot in Nashvillle
mdrs well, I saw him at the Beacon, and he sounded very very good thru the PRS amp....sounded like a big improvment for his live sound. So, I'm very interested that you are trying them out too.
dgrissom He is a monster slide player as well
Dr._Ellwood another Doc?
mdrs go ahead Lee
Dr._Ellwood David, do you ever use wireless xmitters... if so what are you using
dgrissom The amp Derek is using is way different than the Dallas......his is geared for using the neck pickup
dgrissom I used them with Mellencamp and the Chicks.........I don't know what kind
Dr._Ellwood ok thanks some guys dont like the compression,.,. but I DO
dgrissom I definitely prefer a cable
Dr._Ellwood thanks David... ok Doc
mdrs David can you tell us about this new amp project your doing?
dgrissom Klotz cable by the way
dgrissom Sure
Dr._Ellwood Klotz!! OK good!! check them out guys!!
mdrs :P

dgrissom I am going for something with a little more harmonic complexity than the Dallas............somewhat of a hybrid of the best amps I own. It will probably lean a little more British with a very powerful mid control. I have no idea when we will finish it up
mdrs While David is typing, I'll just say that both of his CD's need to be in all of your collections. They are both exceptional!!
mdrs Do you see this as an amp that will be available to us eventually?? :P
Dr._Ellwood I know this is a strange question but,.... David what can we do to help your career? any ideas other than just buying your product
dgrissom Doug Sewell has been at my house several times and I have been able to give him examples of what I am after. I am very lucky to be working with him
dgrissom Of course we hope to have the amp available at some point. It is really gratifying to see and hear about people enjoying the DGT and I would love to have an amp that people dug as well.
dgrissom You guys are helping my career by caring enough to sit here and talk.
Dr._Ellwood thanks David! will you ever or have you ever played Detroit!
mdrs We're happy to do so, David
Greg_B. Guys, I gotta go now, but David, thanks alot for taking the time to do this with us and I look forward to hearing any new music from you. I may be in San Antonio sometime within the year and I will try to make it over to Austin to see you play if I can catch it on a day you're playing. BTW, you made my son's day! He gave me a big high five and was grinning from ear to ear. Don, I'll be waiting on that Fuchs to arrive!!!! wink, wink, nudge, nudge!!!! :P8o :D :-)
mdrs :P
dgrissom Yes I've played Detroit several times. As far as the future goes........I have no idea.
dgrissom Thanks Greg, seeya
ChatBot /logout Greg_B.
mdrs I can say, without reservation, that your DGT is the most unique new guitar I've played in a long time. Amazing tone, and a very unique playing feel. I'm wearing mine out!!
mdrs So, David, are you a home recording guy?
dgrissom Yes I recorded and mixed my CDs at my house
Dr._Ellwood I hope this has not been asked but what is going on with your own touring band? maybe I could help get you booked at the Royal Oak Music Theater here or some other really good venues...
Rampdog Question
dgrissom I don't have a touring band at the moment.......it is unbelievably expensive to go on the road now
mdrs O.K., RampD you are on
Rampdog What recording software do you use at home? Maybe a little bit about your setup?
dgrissom Sure
dgrissom I use Digital Performer with the Universal Audio UAD 2 card. I have some great vintage mics, pres and compressors too.

Dr._Ellwood Live drums or midi?
dgrissom I really enjoy the whole process
Rampdog Thanks... I'm not familiar with DP but I will look into it
dgrissom Live drums.....sometimes I'll put a loop down as a guide but the new CD is Kenny Aronoff and Chris Layton
ChatBot /login Hard_Tail
splitting_hare COOL!
dgrissom I would go Pro Too;s if I was starting over
Dr._Ellwood ok great yes on live drums!
Rampdog So you learned on DP?
mdrs Are the studios where you are doing sessions all ProTools?
dgrissom Yes, I had some friends who wrere using it
Rampdog Thats usually how it goes
Rampdog some great software out there now
dgrissom 99% of the records I play on are Pro Tools
Rampdog they started it all
Dr._Ellwood Who are you listening too currently? what are your fav. bands out there right now and who are your fav. current writers, we have many song writers on this forum David.
dgrissom DP is great for the money...........better value than Pro Tools I think
mdrs any other questions, gents?
Dr._Ellwood Yes Doc
mdrs If not, I have one..........
dgrissom I can never remember who I am listening to..
mdrs go Ell
Dr._Ellwood oh never mind he just answered me...
dgrissom I tend to go back to the classic stuff I grew up on
mdrs Which is?
dgrissom I am also influenced quite a bit by the great Texas songwriters
Dr._Ellwood Did you ever like MoTown stuff
Dr._Ellwood soul
dgrissom Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Wes Montgomery, Joni Mitchell, Norman Blake, etc
dgrissom Yes very much
Dr._Ellwood GREAT!!!!O:-D

dgrissom yes
Rampdog good guy?

dgrissom James Mcmurtry, Joe Ely, Townes Van Zandt
mdrs Duane
dgrissom Johnny is awesome
mdrs Well, David, we love you, man. Keep on doing your thing. If we can help you in any way, we're there for you. And, Are you coming to DonStock 2009?? :P

dgrissom Are you having BBQ?
mdrs OH YEA.......ITALIAN BBQ!!
mdrs my wife is a gourmet chef.......
dgrissom gotta try it
Rampdog 8o
Rampdog One more question please?
mdrs Actually, it'll be all sorts of home made pasta, lasagna, etc.. No one goes home hungry!
mdrs go Ramp
dgrissom It is not totally necessary to tour anymore............if you are a brand new band I think it is but not for someone with a bit of a career under his belt
Rampdog I see in your photos you use the boss CS-3
Rampdog you still use it live?
dgrissom rarely and only in the studio
Rampdog thanks DG
mdrs Any other questions??
Dr._Ellwood David, Don and I love using the Klon, have you ever used one?
dgrissom I have used them for a long time....I was one of his first endorsers I believe
mdrs LOVE THE KLON
mdrs and the Arion
mdrs :P
Dr._Ellwood SEE don why didnt WE know that!!!
dgrissom I have been digging the Pro Analog pedals a lot.....guy out of Indiana
Dr._Ellwood Check out Pro Analog guys!!!
